Last night, Montreal Canadiens player P. K. Subban scored the winning goal against the Boston Bruins in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinal.

Predictably, Boston fans were outraged. In this case, though, with Subban as one of the few black players in the league, their anger took a sickeningly racist turn.

It was so bad that the n-word was briefly trending on Twitter in Boston. Seriously. Think about that for a minute. Think about how many people must have been tweeting one of the vilest, most degrading racist slurs in our language in order for it to be trending in a city the size of Boston.   1. Thanks for reblogging this, Helena. I’ve reblogged it too. It still shocks and frightens me to realize how uncivilized our civilization can be. It wasn’t too long ago (within my lifetime in fact) when lynchings were still being carried out with impunity. That anyone would make a joke about it just turns my stomach.

    I’m sure this kind of thing *must* happen over here too, in pockets of wickedness, but this wholesale hatred is something I *think* we avoid. But I’m not sure, because actually, I don’t have any black friends. I have a Sri-Lankan friend who once forgot that her skin colour added to ‘equality and diversity’ because to herself, and to all of us, she’s just ‘S’…

    Perhaps (I don’t know) I am fortunate enough to have a little more multicultural heritage and normalcy, and though I agree that racisim is still around in English culture, it’s sanctioned very quickly.

    The behaviour there, though, is absolutely repugnant.
