‘Cause Every Once in a While, You Just Crave Some Weird German Expressionism … and David Bowie

I was fortunate enough to recently attend the “David Bowie Is…” Exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and may I just say that I did NOT turn to a life of crime, darlings, though the second floor did tempt me something awful. They had handwritten lyrics, clothes and costumes, instruments — THE MOOG SYNTHESIZER given to Bowie by Brian Eno during the Heroes recording sessions.
They even had THE crystal ball from Labyrinthe.
The other thing they were showing, that I’d never seen before, was this 1979 Saturday Night Live appearance of David Bowie with weird art-opera-performance artist Klaus Nomi. (Dressed all in black, he’s the guy walking the electric pink poodle around during TVC15. Yeah, you read that right — electric pink poodle. Did I mention it has a little TV in its mouth? Oh, and that giant tuxedo jacket Bowie’s wearing during The Man Who Sold The World — they had that there. If David Bowie Is… comes to a city near you, be sure you go — did I mention that they have the original of Warhol‘s cowboy Elvis there? Yeah, they totally do.
