Ever since I first heard Arcade Fire in that summer in California, my first thought was that they reminded me of Talking Heads. Then I learned that David Byrne was a big fan, and it all made sense. Then I learned that David Bowie was a big fan, and that also made a lot of sense.
If you like your pop songs short and formulaic and predictable, though, this isn’t for you.
If you like the idea of a duet between a husband in wife sung back and forth in English and French set to an infectious disco beat produced by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem fame with a smattering of Daft Punk style computerized vocals and late-in-the-song cameo by the Thin White Duke himself, then you’ll love this. If you have eight minutes to spare, darlings, I promise you that you won’t be disappointed.
Oh, and did I mention that the video is directed by Anton Corbijn — yeah, you know, Mr. Black and White himself, who made all the great Achtung Baby era U2 videos, and all those fantastic Depeche Mode videos, and whose videos helped launch the Killers’ career with all those amazeballs videos??
This made my fucking day, let’s just say that. My only regret is that I only found out this morning that they gave a surprise show in Montreal last night, or else you know where I would have been last night.
That’s right, darlings — at the Couche-Tard!!!!
