If You Go Into The Woods Today (Independence Day)

You wanna see something scary?

I mean, really scary — something that will make you sick to your stomach?

Just browse the internet today — July 4th, U.S. Independence Day. On one end of the spectrum, you’ll see jingoism gone mad, and all the worst America has to offer will come out of the woodworks in red, white and blue. And then on the other end, you’ll have the idiots bashing America and starting arguments and getting into political debates — these trolls were obviously never told that no matter what you think of a person, you never call them an asshole on their BIRTHDAY.

And so today, I keep my opinions to myself — and so should everyone. Instead of being a noisy malcontent, why not raise a glass to America — to the country that was, and to the country that is, and to the country that may be.

Put politics aside and let Americans celebrate their birthday undisturbed.

I’ll leave you with an Ani Difranco song called Independence Day.  It’s not political, it’s just about a moment shared, and musing about fireworks. There’s something about her voice that just makes me cry every single time — she could be singing Happy Birthday and I’d probably get teary.

This song’s got a great line in it that says

the fireworks
explode in the sky
and there was an exodus of birds from the trees
but they didn’t know, we were only pretending
and the people all looked up, and were pleased
and the birds flew around like the whole world was ending
and i don’t think war is noble
and i don’t like to think that love is like war
but i gotta big hot cherry bomb, and i want to slip it through the mail slot
of your front door

Happy Independence Day, darlings.
